Gait Symmetry Is Unaffected When Completing a Motor Dexterity Task While Using a Walking Workstation in Healthy, Young Adults

چکیده

Walking workstations may counteract sedentarism in working adults; however, performing dual-task walking affect gait or work performance. The purpose of this study was to examine symmetry parameters and performance while completing a fine motor dexterity task during workstation use. Gait function, quantified as symmetry, used identify attentional resource allocation the co-occurring tasks conditions. Eighteen college-aged students performed Purdue Pegboard Test (PPT) with left right hands separately using at self-selected speed. indices were computed on stride length lower extremity angular joint positions analyzed for comparison baseline PPT No asymmetries found any sub-phase scores decreased significantly condition compared seated standing Overall, did not change position sub-phase; there decrease performance, which relate However, increased exposure improve over time.

The Effect of Cognitive-Task Type and Walking Speed on Dual-Task Gait in Healthy Adults.

In a number of studies in which a dual-task gait paradigm was used, researchers reported a relationship between cognitive function and gait. However, it is not clear to what extent these effects are dependent on the type of cognitive and walking tasks used in the dual-task paradigm. This study examined whether stride-time variability (STV) and trunk range of motion (RoM) are affected by the typ...

Physical Demand but Not Dexterity Is Associated with Motor Flexibility during Rapid Reaching in Healthy Young Adults

Healthy humans are able to place light and heavy objects in small and large target locations with remarkable accuracy. Here we examine how dexterity demand and physical demand affect flexibility in joint coordination and end-effector kinematics when healthy young adults perform an upper extremity reaching task. We manipulated dexterity demand by changing target size and physical demand by incre...

Successful adaptation of gait in healthy older adults during dual-task treadmill walking.

Dual-task methods have been used to demonstrate increased prioritization of walking performance over cognition in healthy aging. This is expressed as greater dual-task costs in cognitive performance than in walking. However, other research shows that older adults can prioritize cognitive performance over walking when instructed to do so. We asked whether age-related cognitive prioritization wou...

Perception threshold of locomotor symmetry while walking on a split-belt treadmill in healthy elderly individuals.

Some hemiparetic patients walk asymmetrically. To better understand the mechanisms of this deficiency, the perception of locomotor symmetry was investigated in healthy elderly individuals. 16 participants (6 women, 10 men; M age = 70.9 yr., SD = 4.1) walked on a split-belt treadmill either at a self-selected or imposed gait speed. The speed of the two belts was initially similar (or different) ...

Constraining Eye Movements When Redirecting Walking Trajectories in Healthy Young Adults

INTRODUCTION Turning around a corner or redirecting the walking trajectory is executed using a specific motor strategy (or synergy) where the eyes and head rotate to the new direction first, followed by the body and feet [1]. In a previous study, it was found that when participants were presented a simulated 90 0 turn while they stepped in place, the eyes and head redirected around the virtual ...
